Workshops

Upcoming workshops will be announced soon!

These one-time events are designed to help ceramicists advance their skills.

For example, a few times a year, we host a three-hour workshop on the art of Raku and horsehair pottery.

Raku is characterized by the removal of a clay object from the kiln at the height of the firing and causing it to cool very rapidly. Pieces are placed in a reduction environment with combustibles to allow for the glazes on the piece to mature. Horsehair pottery is also done in a similar manner in which pieces are taken out of the kiln at peak temperatures and left “naked” (no glaze) upon which organic carbon based materials can be applied to burn into the piece leaving intricate details left by materials such as horsehair, leaves, and feathers.

Students provide their own bisque ware and may bring 2-3 “small” pieces (no more than 6”), as well as any materials they wish to bring. Glazes and various organic materials are provided.
